🥘 Ingredients
To make the Italian Easter pie, you'll need just a few simple ingredients
- Pizza Dough: Is the base of your pizza, creating a canvas for other ingredients and baking up crispy outside, soft inside, with the perfect chewiness.
- Pitted Olives Or Black Olives: Add a burst of savory flavor. Their slight bitterness balances the richness of the cheese and the sweetness of the tomatoes.
- Marinara Sauce: Provides tangy, sweet, and herby notes that complement all the other toppings.
- Mini Mozzarella Balls: Melt beautifully, creating pockets of creamy, gooey cheese that kids love.
- Cheese With Classic Flavor: Could be a cheddar or mozzarella, it melts well and gives the pizza a traditional, familiar flavor that's sure to be a hit with kids.
- Cherry Tomatoes: Offer a pop of color and a fresh, slightly sweet contrast to the other richer toppings.
- Leeks, Dill: Bring mild, sweet, and fresh flavors to pizzas, making them a great way to add greens to a kid-friendly meal.

📖 Substitutions & Variations
- Switch up the sauce! Not a fan of marinara? Try pesto for a fresh, herby twist or white sauce for a creamy, kid-approved alternative.
- More veggie fun! Swap cherry tomatoes for bell peppers, zucchini, or even shredded carrots to sneak in extra color and crunch.
- Cheese it up! Mozzarella is a classic, but I love using a mix of cheddar for extra flavor or ricotta for a creamy surprise.
- Bunny ear creativity! Use breadstick dough or even puff pastry instead of pizza dough for a fun, flaky twist on those adorable bunny ears!
🔪How To Make Easter Pizza?
Once you have all of your ingredients ready, here's what you'll need to do to put this Easter pizza together.
Step One: Separate 2 ounces from the dough for the "ears" of the bunnies. Roll out the rest of the dough into a circle about 0.2 inch thick on a lightly floured surface. Place the dough on parchment paper.
Step Two: Grate the cheese on a coarse grater. Place around the edge of the scone. Form a rim as shown in the photo.
Step Three: Spread the marinara sauce over the whole pie. Spread the mozzarella and sliced tomatoes. Add the olive and onion rings. Divide the remaining dough into 12 equal parts. Make "ears". Moisten the edges with water and "glue the ears" as in the photo.
Step Four: Bake pizza in a 392°F preheated oven until the bottom crust is golden brown, 12-15 minutes. Slightly cool pizza and draw eyes and spouts with food coloring pen (or balsamic sauce). Decorate with dill.
👩🍳 Expert Tips
Ready to give this easy recipe a try? You might want to take note of these little tips and tricks.
- To add more flavor to the pizza, you can also top it with a drizzle of olive oil.
- You can also brush some beaten egg mixture on the exposed parts of the top crust of the pizza to lend it a nice shine.
- While mozzarella cheese is the best choice for this recipe, you can also experiment and add some more kinds of cheese like ricotta cheese and basket cheese. In fact, you can also use a mix of two or more cheeses.
- If you have any excess dough leftover that you want to store for later, transfer it to a large bowl and cover the top with plastic wrap. This can then be refrigerated for 2-3 days.
- I love having lots of toppings on my Easter Pizza, and if you do too, you can also create a deep dish pizza for kids. Simply assemble the dough and the toppings in a springform pan instead of a baking dish.
- If you want to add an egg wash to the pastry, crack and beat an egg. Spread the beaten eggs wash on the pastry for a golden crunch.
💭 FAQs
With pizza, there are endless topping options. Most Italian recipes call for the use of classic ingredients like basil leaves, tomatoes and olives, but you can also experiment and try out toppings like sliced bell peppers, capers, jalapenos, mushrooms, onions, broccoli, pineapple and even grilled and chopped chicken.
For simplicity and taste, using store-bought pizza dough is recommended. It saves preparation time and ensures a soft, chewy crust that children enjoy. If you prefer homemade options, whole wheat or gluten-free doughs are available, but ensure they meet your family's dietary preferences.
Incorporate colorful toppings to create fun shapes or images. For example, arranging vegetables and cheeses to form an Easter bunny or egg design can make the pizza more engaging. Using mini mozzarella balls, cherry tomatoes, and various bell peppers can add vibrant colors and textures.
Yes, you can prepare the pizza up to the baking stage. Assemble the pizza, cover it, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to bake, preheat your oven and bake as directed. This approach allows for a stress-free cooking experience, especially when involving children.
Children often prefer simple flavors. Consider using mild cheeses like mozzarella, lean meats such as chicken or turkey, and a variety of vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, and olives. Allowing kids to choose and arrange their own toppings can also make the experience more enjoyable for them.
After allowing the pizza to cool, promptly place it in a sealed airtight container or tightly wrap it with plastic to preserve its freshness, and then refrigerate. Freeze the pizza by tightly wrapping it in plastic, then store it in a freezer-safe bag or container with minimal air to prevent freezer burn.
