🔪 How To Make Sausage Gravy
- Step 1: Using a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium-high heat.
- Step 2: Once the sausage is cooked and broken down, sprinkle flour over the sausage meat. Ensure the flour soaks up all the oil.
- Step 3: Once the flour has soaked up the oil, allow it to bake off for 1-2 minutes. This will ensure the gravy doesn't taste like flour. Slowly add your milk to the pan, mixing until everything is combined. If you want to add pepper after pouring in your milk, do so then.
- Step 4: Add 1 ½ tablespoons of pepper to the sausage gravy recipe. Turn your heat down to low and allow the sausage gravy to bubble. Once bubbled, turn off the heat. Allow your sausage gravy to thicken.
👩🍳 Expert Tips
- Thickness: If your gravy is too thick, add more milk to the flour and fat mixture. If it's too thin, add more flour.
- Taste: Taste the gravy as you go, adding more seasoning if necessary. If you want a smoother gravy, use a whisk to break up any clumps of flour.
- Wooden Spoon: Use a wooden spoon to break down the cooked sausage.
- Add Heat: If you wish to add heat to your flour mixture, add some crushed red pepper flakes for a kick of spice.

Yes, you can make sausage gravy ahead of time. Just reheat it over low heat, stirring occasionally, until it's heated through.
For the best flavor, start with a good-quality sausage. I like to use a bulk pork sausage, but you can also use breakfast sausage. Avoid using pre-packaged sausage crumbles - they just don't have the same flavor. Try maple sausage or sage sausage for the best flavor.
