Here is a pretty typical message I receive:
Hey there, Eat Your Beets girl,
I see you always saying stuff about coconut oil. I finally bought some. I’m standing here, holding this jar of coconut oil in my hand so… now what?
Hey there, Coconut Newbie!
I’m so glad you asked! Yes, coconut oil is pretty popular in my house. If I’m quite honest, I use it for lots of things. Things way beyond cooking. In fact, I use so much coconut oil in my daily life that I keep jars all around my house! It’s true.
I know you’re wondering what to do with your jar of coconut oil so here are my…
Top 5 Favorite Uses for Coconut Oil
You may notice that a lot of my recipes call for coconut oil. I find coconut oil so versatile. I use it for sautéing veggies in a pan. I use it for frying up eggs. I put a little dab in my pan before I cook sausage. I melt it, swirl in some spices & then coat veggies for roasting. I pop popcorn in it. I even use it in marinades for meat. Some people don’t like the ‘coconutty taste’ in which case you can buy an expeller pressed, less coconutty flavored oil. I am now accustomed to the taste & actually think it lends itself to some recipes like my Citrus and Honey Roasted Beets.
Yep, you guess it. Any recipe that calls for oil (especially yucky old vegetable oil) can easily be substituted with coconut oil. It gives baked goods a wonderful texture & flavor. In fact, coconut oil or butter are the only fats I use for baking. So if your recipe calls for a cup of oil, simply scoop out the coconut oil & melt it to the exact measurement you need. Coconut oil melts easily so if you scooped too much, you can just pour it back into your oil jar & it will harden at room temperature.
Cleansing My Skin & Removing Makeup
If you’ve been following my Skintervention Guide Review you already know I use coconut oil for cleansing my face. YES! This stuff is not only good in your body, it’s good ON your body. Every night I cleanse my face with either coconut oil alone or a coconut oil/caster oil mixture. It leaves my skin super soft & clean. I also use it for removing makeup & it’s by far the best makeup remover I’ve found. I wear contacts & have sensitive eyes so I’ve always had to be extra careful that my chemical makeup remover didn’t irritate my eyes. Now I don’t have to worry about that anymore bc a quick swipe of coconut oil takes my eye makeup right off! Check out this post from Living the Nourished Life about using coconut oil for acne prone skin.
Shaving My Legs
Are you still with me here? Yes, I do really use coconut oil for shaving my legs. Think of it as a two for one. First, you’ve providing a nice, slick surface for your razor & second, you’re moisturizing too! BOOM. I do have to make sure my water is pretty warm & rinse my razor often bc the oil can clog the razor but when I’m short on time (& who isn’t!) I will use the coconut oil for shaving & then don’t need to moisturize my legs after my shower.
Removing Gum From Hair
Any mom’s of gum chewing kids here? Oh how I wish I wasn’t one of you. But I am. My kids LOVE gum. They come home with gum from school, friend’s houses, birthday parties. They love chewing gum & it drives me crazy. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come home to hear my husband tell this story: “Well, I gave her some gum & then it got in her hair…” He actually went so far as to CUT some of her hair once because it was so matted with a big, sticky, blob of pink bubble gum. Ugh! Ladies, please do yourselves a favor. Write a note on your fridge or tape it to your scissors when you’re gone. It should say this.
Dear Husband (babysitter, older brother, etc),
Please put the scissors down & go get some coconut oil & a comb. In less than 2 minutes you’ll have that gum removed from your lovely child’s hair & won’t have to do any explaining at all once the lady of the house gets home.

If you’ve never heard of Topical Traditions, you should absolutely check them out. You can read all about their Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil, how to use coconut oil & where to buy it. Not only do I like Tropical Traditions because of their amazing products but I have to tell you a personal story about their customer service. First, I love that they offer FREE Priority shipping to military PO Boxes overseas. If you’ve ever lives over seas you know how difficult it can be to shop online & get it delivered to you. You also know how frustrating it can be when your shipping can cost almost more than your order. It is so encouraging & refreshing to do business with a company that values it’s Service Members. Once I received an order from Tropical Traditions where 1 out of 4 jars arrived slightly busted at the bottom. I was actually able to salvage about half of the coconut oil out of the jar before I got down to the cracked area so I didn’t consider it a huge loss. I had emailed the company simply to thank them for their products & consideration concerning overseas shipping & then I also mentioned, although it was probably a fluke, one of the jars had cracked. I never requested a replacement. My email was responded to immediately & they shipped me an entire new jar for free. I love to buy from businesses that really keep their customers in mind! I also love that they frequently run fantastic sales on their coconut oil.
